Gender and Women’s Rights in the Middle East and in the Western World

This course studies major themes concerning women, feminism, religion, and identity. We will look at the situation of woman in the (greater Middle East), the role of tradition, sharia and the influences of the Western world. As well we will study feminist theory and talk about woman’s rights both in the Western and in the Muslim world. Topics like sexual harassment, women and leadership or economical discrimination of women will also be discussed. From the workshops for women in Palestine and the years I lived in Germany and the US I have also some “experience on the ground” I want to integrate into the theoretical framework we will work with.
